Google backtracks-a bit-on controversial Chrome sign-in feature

29 September, 2018, 02:37 | Author: Rafael Roberts
  • Google Chrome’s next release will address privacy concerns with cookies and sign-ins

With Google Chrome's Update 69, users who signed into a Google-owned service like Gmail will also sign into the Chrome browser.

"Logging into Gmail and logging into Chrome were two different things, as they obviously are (one is a web service the other is a web browser, to be pedantic again)", said a post by user "ronilan" on Hacker News, a social news platform. In a statement, Zach Koch, Chrome product manager, said, "We want to be clearer about your sign-in state and whether or not you're syncing data to our Google account".

Chrome 69, which came out earlier this month, logs all Google users into Chrome, even if they've previously opted out of signing into Chrome.

In addition, users who signed-in to Chrome with the same account, will see their Google Account picture upfront in the new Chrome UI. This feature allows you to sync data between Chrome and other services to the company and transmit to Google the history of user behavior.

Moreover, Google is also changing the way it handles the clearing of auth cookies.

Many people criticized the new Chrome login functionality and Google has announced it will at least partially change how Chrome login works. "After receiving community feedback about these changes, we have chose to roll back these changes in M69 on Chrome for Desktop and Android", Chrome product manager Emily Schechter said at the time.

As a result, Chrome can pick up where you left off when you change computers or phones.

Privacy advocates were concerned Google was trying to dupe users into turning on Chrome's sync feature. Google Maps will now let you decide where to go and eat with a list of restaurants, clubs, cafe or bars.

Google says that it has listened to feedback about the changes it recently introduced to its web browser and is happy to give users more choice.

Finally, one other change comes to the "clear cookies" function.

"While we think sign-in consistency will help many of our users, we're adding a control that allows users to turn off linking web-based sign-in with browser-based sign-in". Google has said that all cookies will be deleted and users will be signed out when they choose to clear cookies. When not signed in, or when signed in but not syncing, a blue button is being added to indicate that syncing is not active.

As Google Security Princess Parisa Tabriz keeps in touch with, it will in any case default to on, yet you can quit it and have a confirmation that the program isn't synchronizing your information to the cloud out of sight.
