France flights: Planes grounded at Lyon as police chase hits runway

Pursued by police vehicles, a man smashed his auto Monday into security barriers at two airports in Lyon, southeast France, and then crashed through two glass doors of a busy terminal and sped onto the runway, before being arrested.

Before driving onto the runway the man had driven the vehicle into the glass doors of one of the airport terminals.

The government prefect's office said: "Pursued by police, he smashed through Terminal 1 before reaching the runway area".

An official at the local public prosecutor's office said the driver abandoned his auto and tried to flee on foot but was surrounded by officers and arrested.

Local media identified the vehicle as a grey Mercedes with a foreign registration.The driver, who was reportedly responsible for a lot of damage, was arrested.

Flights at the airport were grounded.

The driver the sped on to the runway, government spokeswoman Christelle Monteagudo told the Associated Press.

Multiple police officers, police cars, and a helicopter chased him before ultimately detaining him, Reuters reported, citing police.
