Facebook says new hack leaked data of 50 million users

  • Facebook security breach exposed 50 million accounts to attackers

The issue was found by its engineering team on Tuesday afternoon.

Facebook announced on Friday that it patched the vulnerability on Thursday night, disabled View As and reset the access tokens for the 50 million accounts it knows were targeted as well as another 40 million people who have used View As since its implementation a year ago, for good measure.

The attackers exploited Facebook's systems through a flaw in the company's "View As" feature, the company said, which allows a Facebook user to view his or her own profile as a friend, the public or another third party might see it. "It's why we've taken immediate action to secure these accounts and let users know what happened".

"It's clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook's code", vice president of product management Guy Rosen said in a blog post. More than 90 million users were forced to log out of their accounts on Friday for security reasons.

"We've fixed the vulnerability and informed law enforcement", Rosen said.

"Since we've only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed".

In addition to this, Facebook says as a precautionary measure it has also reset access tokens for another 40 million accounts that have been subject to a "View As" look-up in the past year.

'We also don't know who's behind these attacks or where they're based.

The company said that the security issue was patched last night.

Users that had potentially been affected were prompted to re-log-in on Friday.

We face constant attacks from people who want to take over accounts or steal information around the world.
