Emails raise questions about Brett Kavanaughs positions

  • What I¿ve watched over the last couple days are a bunch of people who want to be the nominee in 2020 and it¿s sad,¿ South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy said of Booker's stunt

Booker gained the national spotlight and some scorn last Thursday when he dared the Senate Judiciary Committee to punish him for releasing "committee confidential documents" related to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, referring to himself as "Spartacus". "As Judge Kavanaugh clarified at this morning's hearing, he was not expressing his personal views". In a lengthy prepared statement, White highlighted Kavanaugh's methods of interpreting laws and his adherence to the U.S. Constitution.

The questions related to the ongoing investigation being conducted by special counsel Robert Mueller into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation to help him win and whether Trump, as president, obstructed justice by trying to thwart the probe.

Democrats are concerned that Kavanaugh will push the court to the right and that he will side with Trump in cases stemming from Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible ties to the Trump campaign.

A Dubuque native testified Friday before the Senate Judiciary Committee on behalf of the U.S. Supreme Court nominee. "Incredibly, that's almost as much as Collins has in her own campaign account", said Matt McDermott, a pollster and senior analyst at the Democratic firm Whitman Insight Strategies.

"I can't comment on that", he said. He cited his opinion in a case releasing Osama bin Laden's former chauffeur, Salim Ahmed Hamdan, from detention at the USA military facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"You'll never have a nominee who's ruled for a more unpopular defendant", Kavanaugh said.

Or, short of tossing out Roe. v. Wade in its entirety, would Kavanaugh and the rest of the court's conservative block embark on a piece-by-piece dismantling of a woman's right to choose until, as a skeptical Sen.

The committee's top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein, sought assurances that the nominee views as settled law the Supreme Court's landmark 1973 decision, Roe v. Wade, establishing abortion rights nationwide.

"I respect the fact that one of my jobs is to determine whether or not the candidate is qualified for the court", she said, "has the requisite experience, and has the judicial temperament, as well as respect for precedence". "I understand the importance of the issue". "This is admittedly not my ideal of how a unitary executive should work, but it is the real world, and there is a very strong tradition in the Executive Branch-and in the Congress and media-that the SG is independent and should come to his or her own independent conclusions about the constitutionality of laws".

He described a 1992 decision reaffirming the original ruling as "precedent upon precedent". He said Americans "need to know the law is predictable".
