Don't Be Fooled by Hurricane Florence Being 'Downgraded.' It's Still Very Dangerous

The downgraded status of the storm, which indicates that Hurricane Florence is moving at maximum sustained wind speeds of 110 miles per hour, means little in terms of its impact and deadly potential, according to Elliot Abrams, chief forecaster at Accuweather.

"Little change in strength is expected before the eye of Florence reaches the coast, with weakening expected after the center moves inland", the Miami-based NHC said. "We know that this is an extremely unsafe situation", Cooper told "CBS This Morning" on Thursday. "Tens of thousands of structures are expected to be flooded, and many more by rising rivers and creeks".

Hurricane Florence has decreased in speed and is now a Category 2 hurricane, the National Hurricane Center announced shortly before midnight Wednesday. As of 8 a.m., its maximum wind speeds remain at 110 miles per hour.

"We're a little anxious about the storm surge so we came down to see what the river is doing now", said Linda Smith, 67, a retired nonprofit director.

Even so, many residents of Myrtle Beach proudly recalled how they had weathered a number of storms in the past and were confident they could ride out Florence too. "We're going to be there to help", Cooper said. That's enough to fill more than 15 million Olympic-size swimming pools.

"Hurricane Sandy did a tremendous amount of damage", Kourounis said. When fierce winds keep up for a long time, homes are "going to start to deteriorate". "There are approximately 800 line workers and tree personnel actively engaged in storm response preparations".

He added: 'The waves and the wind this storm may bring is nothing like you've ever seen.

As of 11 p.m., the storm was centered 280 miles east southeast of Wilmington, N.C., and was moving northwest at 17 mph, and this general motion, accompanied by a gradual decrease in forward speed, was expected to continue through Thursday. "Be careful!" Mr Trump said on Twitter earlier yesterday.

But the real threat from Florence isn't from wind, it's from water, with the National Hurricane Center warning of "life-threatening storm surge and rainfall".

People across the region rushed to buy bottled water and other supplies, board up their homes, pull their boats out of the water and get out of town.

Cheryl Browning lives with her husband and son, who has terminal cancer, in Richlands, North Carolina.

And there's no way her family could afford that - or the $1,728 per room another hotel quoted.

"Since my husband retired and my health declined, we have his retirement as an income".

"I don't care if this goes down to a Category 1", CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said.

"We're recommending people to stay here".

Deakin said 2018 was already shaping up as one for the record books with wildfires blazing across the United States and hurricane season brewing in the Atlantic basin. It's a kind gesture but doesn't alleviate Browning's fear.

Brock, meanwhile, said the surges "are going to be a major problem way up into the streams and tributaries that come out of sound areas". "But I think it'll be OK".

Reacting to the possibility of a more southerly track, Georgia governor Nathan Deal declared an emergency but did not immediately order any evacuations.

"We're just trying to plan for the future here, not having a house for an extended period of time", David Garrigus said.

A hurricane can kill you in a lot of different ways. From southeastern coastal North Carolina into far northeastern SC - expect rainfall amounts of 20 to 30 inches, isolated 40 inches. But it's an exclamation point on an unfolding disaster: Wilmington, North Carolina saw 84 days of floods on sunny days in 2016. Among other storms a year ago, Hurricane Irma caused destruction in Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands, while Hurricane Harvey resulted in severe flooding in parts of Texas. "It's chilling, even from space", he tweeted. "Get prepared on the East Coast, this is a no-kidding nightmare coming for you". Storm surge invades rivers and estuaries, too.

According to the NHC's forecast discussion at 12 p.m. on September 13: "The subtropical ridge to the northeast and east of Florence is now well-established between Bermuda and the USA mid-Atlantic region and extends westward into Virginia and the central Appalachians". Hurricane Helene is veering toward Europe.
