The Justice Department announced cyber hacking charges against a North Korean national linked to the computer hacking of Sony in 2014 and other significant cyber intrusions in a criminal complaint unsealed Thursday.

The suspected hacker, Pak Jin Hyok, acted on behalf of the Hermit Kingdom's Reconnaissance General Bureau, the military intelligence agency that controls most of the country's cyber capabilities, The Washington Post reported, citing USA officials.

The hack of the central bank of Bangladesh saw at least $81 million stolen and transferred between a number of accounts in the Philippines and elsewhere, rendering most of it unrecoverable.

"Kim Jong Un of North Korea proclaims 'unwavering faith in President Trump.' Thank you to Chairman Kim". It will be the first time the United States has brought computer hacking charges against a Pyongyang operative, the Washington Post reports. Officials insist that the timing of the unsealing of the criminal complaint has nothing to do with the June summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Trump, or with the push to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

Almost four years after it jolted Hollywood and threw a wrench into worldwide relations, the Sony hack will once again take center stage in LA today.

Mr Park is charged with one count for conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse, and wire fraud.

The charges against Park continue a strategy by the US government to generate detailed, legally admissible cases against foreign cyber-attackers who are unlikely to ever stand trial in the United States. North Korean hackers stole and released confidential information and emails in the hack, and infamously pressured the studio to pull the theatrical release of the satirical movie "The Interview", which depicted the eventual assassination of a North Korean leader.

The Treasury announced financial sanctions on Park and a government-controlled company he worked for, Chosun Expo Joint Venture.

Last year, the WannaCry ransomware attack affected thousands of businesses across the globe through a computer virus that encrypted files on affected systems, including Britain's National Health Service, where nonfunctional computer systems forced the cancellation of thousands of appointments.

The charges and sanctions singled out Park in some of the most notorious and damaging hacks in recent years, which had already been unofficially pinned on North Korea.

"Our policy is to hold North Korea accountable and demonstrate to the regime that there is a cost to its provocative and irresponsible actions". The depiction caused officials to complain to the United Nations and resulted in the state media of the isolated nation warning of "merciless retaliation".
