  • Celtics guard Jabari Bird to be arraigned on domestic violence charge

Prosecutors on Thursday accused the Boston Celtics guard of assaulting his girlfriend at his apartment last Friday night for four hours, strangling her multiple times and at one point making her lose consciousness, according to MassLive's Tom Westerholm.

"I'm taking some time away from the team as I deal with my legal and medical issues", Bird said in a statement.

The NBA League Office has the final say on what will ultimately be decided in situations like these, but regardless, the Celtics should cut ties with Bird and go on their merry way.

The prosecution asked Bird to be held on $100,000 bail, but the judge decided on $50,000 cash.

According to Boston Celtics beat reporter Tom Westerholm, Bird's release will be pending conditions, including no drugs or alcohol, no weapons, and court-ordered supervision.

According to prosecutors, the woman told police that Bird strangled her and threw her against a wall after they got into an argument at Bird's residence.

Bird was arrested Friday night for a domestic incident in which he allegedly assaulted, choked, and kidnapped his girlfriend.

"The Celtics organization deplores domestic violence of any kind, and we are deeply disturbed by the allegations against Jabari Bird", the team said in a statement.

Bird's attorney, Brian Kelly, did not present his client's side of the story during the hearing.

He is apologizing to his family, the Celtics, his teammates, fans and the National Basketball Association "for the unnecessary distraction that I have caused".

He reportedly texted her that if she did not return to the apartment, he would kill himself.

The police report states the woman eventually took refuge in a bathroom, and when she came out, Bird was displaying "seizure-like symptoms". "I do not condone violence against women", Bird added.

Bird was transferred Saturday to an undisclosed hospital for what police have called an "evaluation" that continued until Thursday when it appeared doctors treating him had concluded he was sufficently healthy to appear in court.

Bird, a second-round draft choice of the Celtics in 2017 out of California, signed a two-year contract with the team this summer after splitting his rookie season between Boston and the Maine Red Claws of the G-League. He appeared in just 13 games last season.
