  • Regional Pot Workers Could Face Lifetime Ban From US News Centre News

A senior USA border official told news site Politico that Canadians in the burgeoning sector could be deemed inadmissible to the US.

A released earlier this year by Canada's fourth-largest bank predicted the nation's legal cannabis market will approach $6.5 billion in retail sales by the end of the decade.

If a traveler admits to past use of any drugs that are illegal in the US, such as marijuana, he or she will be found inadmissible.

People that work or have connections with the new legalized business have been already placed on a lifetime ban in entering the United States.

"I think it's incredibly unsafe for someone to [lie], especially if they are somebody who works in the industry and their affiliation with the industry is readily available online", said Enenajor.

Canadians about to enjoy newly legal marijuana - and even investors in the sector - could face new headaches at the USA border.

In its report, Politico spoke with Todd Owen, executive assistant commissioner for the Office of Field Operations, who said that border officials are not planning to go out of their way to interrogate every Canadian traveller about marijuana use, but there will be factors may cause them to raise the topic. He also noted that sniffing dogs can smell residue weeks after it's been used so people crossing should not lie if the questions are asked.

He also said that investors in the industry could also face a ban.

"We don't recognize that as a legal business", Mr. Owen added.

A lifetime ban will also apply to Canadians who admit to having used marijuana, even after legalization in Canada goes into effect October 17. Under the policy, USA officials are to bar entry to Canadians who acknowledge having consumed marijuana at any time in their past, as well as those who are either employed or invested in legal cannabis enterprises.

"Despite one-in-eight Canadians using cannabis today, 400,000 people move between our two countries every day nearly entirely without incident", Canada's public safety office told Bloomberg. That means treating marijuana users like criminals and those who work in the marijuana industry like drug traffickers, even if they aren't trying to bring any of the stuff into the states.

So even after legalization in Canada, if a traveller admits to past use of any illegal drugs, including marijuana, the traveller will be found to be inadmissible into the United States.
