California to phase out fossil fuels for electricity by 2045

Brown's remarks came Monday during an interview with The Associated Press after he signed the bill setting a goal of generating all California electricity from clean sources by 2045.

Brown said in a statement as he signed the law in Sacramento, "California is committed to doing whatever is necessary to meet the existential threat of climate change". At the same time that he signed the measure, SB100, Brown also issued an executive order that establishes a new carbon neutrality target for that same year.

Less than a fortnight after the California State Assembly passed Senate Bill 100 (SB-100) by a margin of 43 to 32, the State's Governor has signed the bill into law, confirming the words of the bill's author, State Senator Kevin de León, last month: "When it comes to fighting climate change and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, California won't back down". It will not be immediate.

"It's not going to be easy".

"Brown, who has positioned California as a global leader in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, approved the measure as he prepares to host a summit in San Francisco of climate change leaders from around the world later this week", writes ABC.

On June 1, 2017, President Donald Trump announced he planned to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement.

Environmentalists cheered the news Monday.

The goal would then be to use only carbon-free sources to generate electricity by 2045. "So much credit is due to community groups around California that turned the fires and droughts and floods into fuel for significant climate action". And I feel so proud of people all over America who have kept fighting to clean up climate pollution, despite the federal government's abandonment. Although California has phased coal plants out of its state-wide energy mix, it still relies.

Critics said they were concerned that the bill would bring higher electricity prices.

As the Trump administration rolls back federal efforts to combat climate change, California has actively pursued a leading role in the worldwide fight against global warming. We have the power to create the future that our children deserve - but only if we replace fossil fuels with clean energy by the middle of this century.

"If we're going to have these first-in-the-nation laws, we want to see first-in-the-nation benefits", said Rob Lapsley, president of the California Business Roundtable.

Californians overall seem to favor the law.

That's right: 100 percent "clean energy" in 27 years. Lawmakers ratcheted that target up several times, leading to the construction of massive new solar farms and expanded wind facilities.

The path to 100 percent renewables by 2045 was described as "the most ambitious carbon neutrality commitment of any major economic jurisdiction in the world - of more than 20 countries and at least 40 cities, states and provinces planning to go carbon neutral by mid-century or sooner".

Renewable energy experts have looked to batteries that can store solar energy generated in the afternoon as one solution, but the technology is not ready for wide-scale deployment. The remaining electricity came from non-renewable sources, including natural gas at 33 percent.
