  • Car PLOUGHS into crowd in busy square - three dead and 43 injured

Nine people have died and 46 others were injured when a auto ploughed into a crowded square in southern China.

Around 7.30pm, a driver ploughed his vehicle into several people in the square in Hengyang City, Hunan province, the local government said in a posting on Weibo, China's popular social media platform.

Eyewitness footage uploaded to social media shows multiple bodies strewn across the square with people tending to the injured on the blood-soaked pavement, to the sounds of despairing screams all around.

Another 46 people were wounded, three of them severely, the government said in a news release.

A local government statement described it as a "deliberate, malicious case of driving with intent to injure".

Police have reportedly named the suspect as a 54-year-old man, Yang Zanyun. He had previously served several prison sentences for crimes including arson and assault, the Beijing Youth Daily said.

Yang has a long criminal record with previous convictions for selling drugs, theft and attacking people, which caused him to harbor a desire for "revenge on society", the government said. No other motive has been offered.

"He drove the vehicle by himself into the crowd at Yujiang Square that night and had with him shovels and daggers to attack the crowd, intending to cause serious damage", a Thursday police statement said.

Police blamed that attack on Muslim separatists from the Uighur ethnic minority group.
