  • Aston Martin announces Rapide E as its first all-electric model - Autoblog

The first concrete details about the Aston Martin Rapide E and its powertrain have been revealed by the British sports vehicle maker.

The Rapide E is shooting for a 200-mile (WLTP) range, and should charge at 185 miles of range an hour when using a 400v 50kW charger. Its rear wheels will be powered by a 800V battery architecture with a 65kWh installed capacity, mounted where the original 6.0-litre V12 and fuel tank were located.

On the go, the auto will be capable of reaching a top speed of 155 miles per hour (250 km/h), while the zero to sixty acceleration time is expected to be under four seconds. This battery system powers two rear mounted electric motors producing a combined target output of just over 448kW and a colossal 950Nm of torque.

The Rapide E is targeting an 155mph v-max and sub-4.0 second 0-60mph time, while instant torque means the Rapide E can climb from 50-70mph in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it 1.5 seconds. "Our offer will have very credible acceleration - equal to a petrol Aston Martin - but you'll be able to drive the vehicle rapidly all the way around the Nurburgring without it derating or conking out on you". Instead the target is for maximum performance on-demand throughout majority of the battery state of charge window, as would be expected from a conventional internal combustion-engined auto. The exterior and underbody are "aerodynamically optimized", while newly designed aerodynamic wheels have also been fitted. Both will drive through a limited-slip diff and the Rapide E will also feature a revised suspension to cope with its new weight distribution.

But Aston Martin also says, with the Rapide E, it has retained and even enhanced the feel, character and delivery of the V12-powered Rapide S. As a career automotive engineer, I'm proud that the auto industry is leading the way in finding long-term solutions and reducing harmful emissions.

As a trial balloon, it will launch an electric version of its four-door sports sedan under the Aston Martin brand, the Rapide E.

Speaking of the Rapide E programme, Andy Palmer, CEO Aston Martin, commented: "Environmental responsibility and sustainability is a global challenge faced by us all".

The exterior and underbody have been aero-optimized for the electric version of the 6-liter V12 Rapide, and the auto has been treated to a fresh set of aerodynamic wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero low rolling-resistance tires (which feature noise-canceling foam). "Rapide E will also serve as a critical step on our path to re-launching Lagonda as the world's first zero-emission luxury marque".

Just 155 examples of the Aston Martin Rapide E will be made, with production starting in 2019 at Aston Martin's EV-focused St Athan site in Wales - the same place where that'll manufacture Aston's all-electric Lagonda models.
