That is, in everything except the names.

Apple has just announced the new iPhone XS and its bigger brother XS Max. The XS Max, which looks to be about the size of the iPhone 8 Plus but with a much bigger display, will become the most expensive iPhone ever, starting at $1,099 in the USA and €1,249 ($1,452) in Germany.

However, Apple may face challenges selling the more expensive new models locally given that we're now keeping our phones longer rather than upgrading as soon as our 24-month contracts finish.

The iPhone Xs Max, pronounced like "tennis max", might just as well be read as "excess max". But, people are already reading it as X, and that's likely to catch on.

It's an engineering marvel that Apple's been able to pack in so much screen, so many sensors and so much processing power into such a small space.

As befits the hype, glitz and glamor of an Apple launch, the company revealed the details of its new smartphone models and a new smartwatch in Cupertino on Wednesday.

"We all knew this was going to be a transitional but not transformational phone update", said Trip Miller, managing partner at hedge fund Gullane Capital, which owns Apple shares.

"Did they really name the new iPhone the 'excess"?' XS? Is this an SNL skit?' another user commented.

Others found the company's lack of creativity to be a bigger issue, with many simply calling the new names "dumb" and 'lazy'. The iPhone Xs Max is the Supersized Big Mac and fries phone for an era of healthier digital diets.

Apple introduced its first £1,000 smartphone - the iPhone X - last year, and despite a slight drop in sales, the company has reported increased revenue and profit during 2018. For example, the iPhone XR costs £749, £799 or £899 in the United Kingdom, depending on the capacity.

The flying elephant of the new lot is the iPhone Xs Max, which sounds like it could be a new flavor of Mountain Dew, or perhaps an extreme sport. It has the same basic design of the iPhone X and Xs, with a large edge-to-edge screen. The XR has a 6.1-inch screen, which lands it right between the XS and XS Max in terms of size.

Apple has bolstered the batteries loaded into each phone too. But Apple claims that the XS will go 30 minutes longer on a charge than the X does, while the XS Max will last 90 minutes more.

Hindustan Times, owned by HT Media Ltd, is one of India's largest publications that provides unbiased news, analysis and features on politics, sports, entertainment, lifestyle and more. Both new phones cram the same number of pixels into each inch as the display on the original iPhone X. As you can see, however, this deal is only good for a limited time, and only applies to iPhone XS models.
