  • Australia joins bid to rescue injured Indian sailor in remote ocean

The commander's friends have been in touch with another participant, Gregor McGuckin, an Ireland national whose yacht Biscay 36 Hanley Energy Endurance was also dismasted in the same storm.

The Australian navy ship will join the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft belonging to the Australian air force deployed from the French La Reunion Island on the Indian Ocean in the search.

In its efforts to rescue Indian Navy Commander Abhilash Tomy, who now lies injured in his sailing vessel in the south of Indian Ocean, defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said the officer would be rescued by French vessel Osiris in the next 16 hours.

His location is said be in the south Indian Ocean, approximately 1,900 nautical miles (nm) from Perth, Australia, and 2700 nm (approx 5,020 kms on ground) from Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari).

The Australian Defence Force said they are assisting in the rescue effort for Tomy, who became the first Indian to circumnavigate the globe in 2013. Thereafter, he is likely to be taken to R/V Australian Naval ship HMAS Ballarat, which has left Perth to bring him.

On Saturday, the Navy dispatched its stealth frigate INS Satpura to rescue Tomy.

The mast of Abhilash Tomy's yacht Thuriya broke off when it was rolled in a storm on Friday and the yachtsman suffered what he described as a "severe back injury".

"Commander Tomy responded by ping on EPIRB as the aircraft was flying over him", the spokesman said in Kochi.

The 39-year-old Indian navy commander has been communicating using a Yellow Brick texting unit with a battery life of days, and an operation co-ordinated from Australia is rushing to reach a position on the limit of sea rescue.

Commander Tomy was representing India in the Golden Globe Race 2018 (GGR) on an indigenously-built sailing vessel "S V Thuraya".

The race said that subsequent messages indicated that Tomy was safe but lying immobilized in his bunk, with his latest message reading: "CAN MOVE TOES".

Tomy's own yacht is a replica of Robin Knox-Johnston's Suhail, victor of the first Golden Globe Race.

Rear Admiral Jonathan Dallas Mead, commander of the Australian fleet, has said it would take a few days to reach Tomy's location in such unsafe conditions.

It had also said other entrants were asked to make towards Tomy's position if possible, and added that the weather was extreme. That means sailing without modern technology or the benefit of satellite based navigation aids.

He is taking part in one of the world's most challenging solo events, The Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, a 30,000-mile journey around the world which celebrates Sir Robin Knox-Johnston's historic 1968-1969 first solo non-stop circumnavigation.
