The character has been played by Melissa Benoist in the titular CW series that's heading into its fourth season, and is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. and DC Films are developing a feature film starring the Girl of Steel.
The superheroine first appeared in "Action Comics #252" from writer Otto Binder and illustrator Al Plastino. Kara Zor-El was also sent off in a rocket as Krypton exploded, but instead of being sent straight to Earth she was stuck in suspended animation for a few decades. Supergirl adopted the secret identity of orphan Linda Lee and made Midvale Orphanage her home. The report also cites rumors, but only rumors, that this could signal a launching point for a new Superman, as it suggests DC is keen on creating a new template for future films starring the Man of Steel.
Of course, the Girl of Steel is no stranger to the movies, with the Christopher Reeve Superman-era effort in 1984's Supergirl, which starred Helen Slater. There is no producer attached to the project yet, and none of the juicy details that DC fans would want to know have been released - such as if/how the film is connected to the larger DC Extended Universe franchise, or if Henry Cavill's Superman (or another version?) will be making an appearance.
Supergirl is one of The CW's many successful DC Comics-adapted shows, which is altogether commonly referred to as the "Arrowverse". His versatility will only increase with the script for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, as well as a return to his roots with the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot film.
