Novak Djokovic hits a shot during his straight sets win over Peter Polansk at the Canadian Open in Toronto

Stan Wawrinka (left) and Rafael Nadal (right) meet at centre court following their match in the Rogers Cup tennis tournament at Aviva Centre in Toronto August 10, 2018.

World number one Nadal kicked off his campaign with an emphatic 6-2 6-3 win over Benoit Paire, breaking six times over the one hour 14 minute match. But that match served to reinforce the status of the four-time former Rogers Cup champion and No9 seed, Novak Djokovic. "I'll take it as a good experience and look forward to the next event". Overall, my game was so-and-so.

The match was played under threatening grey skies which eventually dumped heavy rain on the courts just after Djokovic wrapped up his win.

Second seed Alexander Zverev, the holder, lined up a re-run of last week's Washington semi-final as he again takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Nadal will next face Marton Fucsovics of Hungary or Swiss Stan Wawrinka.

The pair exchanged breaks in the second before Nadal edged ahead in the tiebreak to win 7-5, 7-6 (7/4).

Russian Karen Khachanov reached the second round at the expense of Serb Filip Krajinovic 6-3, 6-2, while American Sam Querrey beat Adrian Mannarino of France 6-2, 7-5.

Anderson was too good for Ilya Ivashka 7-5 6-3, while Dimitrov overcame Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 7-6 (7-4). "And I'm all in favour of that", Djokovic said after beating Peter Polansky, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the third round of the ATP Toronto Masters on Wednesday.

Del Potro, who had a bye in the first round, was set to play Robin Haase, with the Dutchman instead facing lucky loser Mikhail Youzhny.

It was a routine outing for ninth seed Djokovic as the Serbian star defeated Polansky 6-3 6-4.

The inclement weather also forced Shapovalov to wait, but the Canadian had no issues dispatching Chardy 6-1 6-4.

Kerber, from Germany wilted in the sticky heat at IGA Stadium in her first match since Wimbledon.

"Felix, you know, he's not even 18 and playing at this stage and showing some dedication on the court and willpower, which is quite nice to see and refreshing", Djokovic said. "I was not at my 100 per cent today", Nadal said. Every tournament starts from zero.

It has happened for me, the big comeback, winning a big trophy in Wimbledon, in the best possible scenario in the best possible setting.

Play was also suspended in the match between world number one Simona Halep of Romania and Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

He will play 14th-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini in the second round Wednesday afternoon.

Third-seeded American Sloane Stephens, meanwhile, progressed through to the third round with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Canada's Françoise Abanda.
