US President Trump says in 'no rush' to get NAFTA deal

  • Canada deliberately sidelined from latest NAFTA talks, Trump suggests

They've said Ottawa's partners have frozen it out of the critical NAFTA negotiations as a tactic and have warned that Canada could eventually be forced into accepting a deal reached between the USA and Mexico.

Officials from each country have insisted there's nothing unusual about the one-on-one discussions on the three-country deal because it's allowing the USA and Mexico sort tough bilateral issues, such as their differences on autos.

The day before, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, the lead negotiator for the United States, said that he was hopeful that the two sides could reach a breakthrough over the next few days.

"We have everything on the table, there are no preconditions and we'll see at the end how the whole thing falls into place", Guajardo said as Thursday's meetings concluded.

Trump has driven the USA negotiating process, threatening to dump NAFTA if it is not renegotiated in favor of the United States.

"Their tariffs are too high, their barriers are too strong, so we're not even talking to them right now".

President Donald Trump may claim another significant win next week on the global trade front as negotiations with Mexico are expected to conclude.

At the same time, he indicated that Canada could rejoin the talks soon.

"We have much better alternatives than that. So, if you can't make the right deal, don't make it". NAFTA is a three-way agreement that includes Canada and without the U.S.'s northern neighbor's agreement, NAFTA could end up sidelined - permanently. NAFTA has been a disaster for our country'.

He said technical discussions would continue Monday and that he would return Tuesday to continue the high-level talks.

Over the last month, the United States has essentially cut out Canada from the trade negotiations in order to focus on working with Mexico on some remaining concerns, such as rules over the auto sector that Canada has already largely agreed to.

"Minister Freeland, Ambassador (David) MacNaughton and the Canadian negotiating team are in regular contact with their counterparts and we look forward to continuing these important discussions in the coming weeks", Adam Austen wrote in an email.

Mexico has not yet engaged with the United States over a "sunset clause" that could kill NAFTA after five years, he added.
