Thousands of Uber Drivers Go on Strike in Australia

  • Uber drivers across the country strike for better conditions

Uber has mounted an aggressive and highly visible campaign against the cap, but Corey Johnson, the council speaker, believes it has enough support to pass - a stark difference from three years ago when Uber defeated an earlier cap proposed by Mayor Bill de Blasio. "Congestion is worse now and there are so many for-hire vehicles on the road".

An afternoon recap of the day's most important business news, delivered weekdays. The city has more than 80,000 app-based cars, often without passengers, up from 12,600 since 2015, according to the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission.

Drivers that are in support of the bill, both from taxi companies and within Uber and Lyft, claim that a spike in traffic, drop-off in productivity, and steep decline in the value of taxi medallions from over $1 million down to less than $200,000 are all results of ride-sharing's now unchecked rise in the city. "We doubled it up to 400", he said. A study last month found that 85 percent of for-hire vehicle drivers earn less than $17.22 an hour.

There is "resounding support" for the cap among drivers, said Bhairavi Desai, executive director of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, a group that represents many taxi and Uber drivers.

His company is quickly buying for-hire vehicle licenses. The drivers are protesting against the company for adding features that are created to further underpay and shortchange them.

Uber also supports the minimum-pay standard, Post said, because it gives the company an incentive to aim for a total number of drivers that isn't so large that competition reduces their earnings. With no new vehicles joining the app, Uber drivers say they will have less competition and could spend more of their day carrying passengers instead of driving around in an empty auto.

The one-year cap allows unlimited additional permits for wheelchair-accessible cars and exceptions in the event that data shows certain neighborhoods require additional cab service.

Mr de Blasio defended the cap Friday and argued that it was part of his broader efforts on income inequality.

"The issue we raise is countrywide and mostly in Melbourne and Sydney", Max, spokesman for the group, said. "It's hurting the livelihoods of the yellow cab drivers as well".
