Of course, there's also the as yet untitled Star Trek 4, which appears to be inching closer and closer to production.

The sequel was supposed to be a wibbly, wobbly, timey, wimey adventure that featured James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) somehow joining forces with his long-dead father George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth), but some serious doubt has been cast on it happening.

The two men were said to be in negotiations to star in the upcoming sci-fi blockbuster but talks have broken down with both sides walking away, according to The Hollywood Reporter. After all, the actor's role in the first film was short lived and he's never officially been confirmed for the project - despite being rumored to return since 2016 when Brad Grey was still in charge of Paramount Studios.

Star Trek 4 does not now have a release date. For now, though, the future of Kirk in Star Trek 4 remains unclear.

Contract negotiations are expected to go forward the rest of the returning Star Trek movie cast, which includes Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg. The bad news is that both Pine and Hemsworth may be out of the film.

The report claims the root cause of the problem is money: Hemsworth and Pine have allegedly both refused to accept a pay cut as studio bosses slash the budgets. That mediocre performer would be Star Trek Beyond, which sources say Paramount actually lost money on. The 2009 movie made only $385 million worldwide, but it made $257 million from domestic receipts.

It's not yet clear what will happen to Star Trek 4 from this point on.

J.J. Abrams' 2009 franchise restarter Star Trek turned in $386 million, while 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness is the top earner so far, with $467 million.

Hemsworth meant to return by time travel as Kirk's father but also chose to exit. Star Trek 4 will make history as the first-ever installment in the longstanding franchise to be directed by a woman.

According to Paramount and Skydance, the movie is a "priority development" and will not be "put on hold".
