Five people were killed Sunday afternoon after a Cessna 414 departing Santa Ana, California's Orange County Airport crashed into the parking lot of a nearby mall.

The plane was flying from Northern California and had been given approval to land at John Wayne after the pilot declared an emergency, said Peter Knudson, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating along with the Federal Aviation Administration.

Fire authorities were called about the crash around 12:30 p.m. local time. They said no one on the ground was injured. Tony Bommarito, the public information officer with Orange County Fire Authority.

"It actually came down in front of us". We looked up and we just saw a plane fall.

The location of the crash is between the cities of Santa Ana and Costa Mesa, about 40 minutes south of Los Angeles.

When the engine failed the aircraft began free-falling from the sky and before landing in an empty parked auto outside of a Staples store.

The parking lot is shared by Staples, a CVS drug store, a Michaels' decorations store, and a Wells Fargo Bank branch.

The aircraft was heading to John Wayne Airport, but it was unclear where it was coming from, according to spokeswoman Deanne Thompson.
