Redskins to host Adrian Peterson

  • Redskins host Jamaal Charles on free-agent visit

After putting the four-time All-Pro through a tryout on Monday, the Washington Redskins have signed Peterson, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported, via a source informed of the situation. Washington has already lost rookie running back Derrius Guice for the entire regular season because of a torn ACL and several other backs on their current roster are also dealing with injuries. He started the year with the New Orleans Saints before being released and joining the Arizona Cardinals.

It is clear that Peterson still has the desire to continue his illustrious career, which it will come down to having the opportunity presented in front of him to do so.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, among players with at least 150 rushes over the past two seasons Peterson has averaged only 3.1 yards per carry - the third-fewest yards per rush attempt in that time.

But despite his accolades - Peterson, a four-time all pro selection and 2012 NFL MVP, is 12th on the all-time rushing yards list - he remained unsigned after posting only 529 rushing yards in 10 games previous year. That injury brought an early end to Peterson's 2017 season.

When news broke Sunday of impending visits for the free-agent trio of Peterson, Jamaal Charles and Orleans Darkwa, Gruden emphasized that he's not looking for a starter.

Washington has had four running backs suffer injuries this preseason. If he's at his best he gives the Redskins a homerun threat to pair with Chris Thompson, Robert Kelley, Samaje Perine and perhaps Kapri Bibbs.

It remains to be seen whether Peterson will make the Redskins' final 53-man roster. Perine is also nursing an ankle injury.

The 33-year-old and 2012 NFL MVP ranks 12th on the all-time rushing list with 12,276 rushing yards, just three yards away from passing Marshall Faulk and 36 yards away from eclipsing Jim Brown's record. He underwent surgery in May to remove a stabilizing plate in his leg.
