  • Scientists Pick Up First Mysterious Radio Signal From Deep Space

CHIME detected the FRB 180725A, followed by radio signals at much lower frequencies at 400 kHz, which are confirmed not to have originated anywhere on Earth but owe their origin somewhere in the celestial universe. "The event is clearly detected at frequencies as low as 580 MHz and represents the first detection of an FRB at radio frequencies below 700 MHz", according to a post on The Astronomer's Telegram, a webpage where astronomers can quickly post their new observations. No FRB has ever been detected below a frequency of 700 Mhz before.

Known as fast radio bursts (FRBs), the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) located in British Columbia received the signal now named FRB 180725A.

As a result, scientists believe that the source (whatever it is - PRESUMABLY ALIENS, THOUGH) is likely to be extremely powerful. The signal has now been branded by the name "FRB 180725A".

According to a statement released in The Astronomer's Telegram (a bulletin board of astronomical observations posted by accredited scientists), the mystery signal - named FRB 180725A after the year, month and day it was detected - transmitted in frequencies as low as 580 megahertz, almost 200 MHz lower than any other FRBs ever detected.

The question that remains is uncovering where these signals have come from, with many possible theories being thrown into the mix.

Fast radio bursts are extremely uncommon and were first discovered in 2007 with only a handful observed ever since.

Puzzling pulses like these are sometimes called fast radio bursts (FRBs), because they may last just a few milliseconds.

Christopher Conselice, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Nottingham, told MailOnline this discovery could help to pave the way for a greater understanding of what causes FRBs.

"They could be caused by exploding stars, supernova, exotic stars like pulsars, magnetars, neutron stars or massive black holes at the centre of distant galaxies".

The study of FRBs is only in its incipient stages and astronomers are confident that more such radio signals will be detected as our technology progresses.
