Questions raised about timing of New Mexico compound search

Authorities raided the compound last week and arrested five adults on child abuse charges.

He said he immediately called authorities in Clayton County, Georgia, the Missing and Exploited Children hotline, New Mexico state troopers, and the Tao County Sheriffs Office. The women are believed to be the mothers of some, if not all, of the children.

In the Facebook video, Wahhaj said he wanted "to find out what made my children act in such a dramatic way", noting they had cut off relations with family and friends.

The boy was not among the 11 children rescued, but child remains were found at the compound and have yet to be identified.

It wasn't until about four months ago, when he saw missing child posters with Abdul-ghani on them, that he realized that the boy might have been kidnapped.

"The police came in because of information that we gave them", he said, adding a body found at the compound was that of his grandson, 4-year-old Abdul-ghani Wahhaj.

According to Latifa Weinman, a local Muslim who visited with the defendants at the jail earlier this week, Subhannah Wahhaj is Siraj Ibn Wahhaj's sister and Leveille is his other wife.

On Monday, authorities returned with new intelligence to retrieve the body of a small boy - possibly the missing and severely disabled Georgia boy Abdul-ghani Wahhaj.

"The Badgers had asked for these people to be removed from their property", Fuhlendorf said.

"We just figured they were doing what we were doing, getting a piece of land and getting off the grid", Anderson said.

"We have been meeting with law enforcement since day one", Wahhaj said. He is accused of refusing to tell authorities the younger Siraj Wahhaj's location during the compound raid.

The imam said that the notion of his children being involved in extremist activities "doesn't sound like them" and "sounds insane", but stated that he is refraining from making any judgments "because we just don't know".

She and Siraj Ibn Wahhaj had been married nearly 14 years, and she said he disappeared after saying he was taking the boy to a park. Wahhaj is believed to be a Muslim extremist. "We also knew from the layout of the compound they would have an advantage if we didn't deploy tactfully and quickly".

Taos County prosecutor Timothy Hasson charged the imam's son "poses a great danger to the children found on the property as well as a threat to the community as a whole due to the presence of firearms and his intent to use these firearms in a violent and illegal manner". "God forbid. I've never seen anything like that". He said the children "looked like third-world country refugees not only with no food or fresh water, but with no shoes, personal hygiene and basically dirty rags for clothing".

Prosecutors did not raise the allegation that a child was being trained for a school shooting in court on Friday, the Associated Press reported.

"I wasn't able to save my son", she told the television station.

Ramzi said her son suffered from seizures and walked with a limp. "He needs everything. I don't know if he's alive, or he is, well, I don't know his condition now". "I need nothing from you".

Wahhaj's father, Siraj Wahhaj, is the imam of a mosque in Brooklyn in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.

In January, a note on Wahhaj's Facebook page spoke about Siraj, Hujrah, and Subhanah, his children, and Morton and Leveille, who he identified as his son and daughter in law, and 12 grandchildren.

Upon authorities' arrival, Wahhaj was "heavily armed with an AR15 rifle, five loaded 30 round magazines, and four loaded pistols, including one in his pocket when he was taken down", Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said.

AMALIA, N.M. A property owner questioned Friday why authorities did not search a squalid New Mexico compound sooner for a missing boy, saying he told them in late spring that he had met the child's father at the site and that the man was wanted in Georgia for kidnapping his own son.

"Deception and lies!" she wrote.

The compound was found on property that had been purchased by a couple, Tanya and Jason Badger, according to documents released by court officials.
