And they've broken into servers at the PGA of America, locking up marketing materials for the this week's PGA Championship and the upcoming Ryder Cup in France, according to a BBC report.
PGA play began Thursday at Bellerive Country Club.
According to Golfweek, on Tuesday morning the officials realized their systems had been compromised and a message appeared on screen: "Your network has been penetrated".
Golfweek reported the files hacked into included promotional banners and logos as well as digital signage for this week's major. "All files on each host in the network have been encrypted with a strong algorithm".
The stolen files, according to the report, also include development work on logos and signs for future PGA Championships, much of it not easily replaced. The hackers also warned that any attempt to break the encryption would result in the destruction of the files.
The hackers have stated their motive by providing a Bitcoin wallet address. Bitcoin wallets can't be traced to an individual or entity or used to identify suspects. "No decryption software is available in the public".
Ransomware has hit PGA of America. An anonymous source from the PGA of America said that the association does not intend to meet any extortion demands, and could speak no further because they were not authorized to speak on the subject.
In the meantime, the PGA and IT experts are addressing the problem, but have yet to regain control of the files.
