Perseid meteor shower coming this weekend to a sky near you

  • The Perseid meteor shower above Salime Reservoir in Spain August 2017

During the Perseids' peak on the nights of August 11-12 and August 12-13, skywatchers should see about 60 to 70 meteors per hour, Space.com said.

Get ready to look up in the sky: The best meteor shower of the year is coming. "The moon is very favorable for the Perseids this year, and that'll make the Perseids probably the best shower for 2018 for people who want to go out and view it".

According to Cook, the moon will be near a new moon, and will be crescent, setting before the Perseid show, underway after midnight. Venus are Jupiter are both set before the Perseid, best views from 9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. During outburst years (such as in 2016) the rate can be between 150-200 meteors an hour. Lastly, the Perseids are awesome because they are one of the most intense showers. The meteors travel at 37 miles per second and most are the size of a grain of sand.

The Perseids are produced when the earth moves through the debris left behind by the Comet Swift Tuttle between July 17 to August 24.

At best, a typical Perseid meteor shower produces 80 to a few hundred meteors per hour. Look for the constellation Perseus in the northeastern portion of the sky. The last time Swift-Tuttle passed near Earth was in 1992, which was so large that earth spends weeks inside the debris zone it left behind.

No special equipment is needed to enjoy this nighttime spectacle, just a dark sky and some patience. If you can find a secluded area away from city lights you will see more flashes.
