  • Watch: Two Hamas Terrorists Dead as Israel Returns Fire from Gaza

What Happened: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have released a video showing a tank round explosion that killed two elite Hamas fighters, Haaretz reported August 7.

On Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces used tank fire against a Hamas military post in northern Gaza in response to the shooting at Israeli troops from there.

The group called to immediately release the captains who were arrested by the Israeli naval forces in worldwide waters as they tried to break the blockade imposed on Gaza.

The incident is expected to shatter efforts by Egypt and the United Nations to reach a long term truce between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The video then cuts to separate footage of a shell hitting the post and an explosion.

The two terrorists killed were identified as Ahmed Marjan and Abed al-Hafez al-Silawi, both snipers in Hamas' Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

"The resistance can not allow the occupation to impose a policy of bombing sites and targeting fighters without paying the price", a Hamas statement said.

In turn, earlier, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning Israel for actions in Gaza.

Israel's security cabinet discussed the proposal on Sunday, but afterwards ministers said only that the Israeli military was "prepared for any scenario". Three Palestinians were reportedly killed and dozens injured, mostly by Israeli ammunition during the protests. Violence between the Palestinians and Israel has gained momentum late March, when Gazans started marching towards the fenced border with Israel in a series of protests calling for the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their lands in Israel. Israel has said they only opened fire in self-defence or on people trying to infiltrate its territory.

Since 2014, Hamas has held four Israeli soldiers, two of whose fate is unknown.
