Oscars to shorten run-time, add popular film category

  • The Oscars Will Be Adding A New Category To Honor ‘Popular’ Movies

"Oscars designating a new award for "popular movies" just reiterates to its entire voting body and the world the inane conception that genre movies aren't as good as dramatic! independent! films!" wrote Polygon's Julia Alexander.

The 91st Oscars telecast remains as announced on Sunday, February 24, 2019.

This is especially interesting as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has never won an Oscar - embarrassingly, despite Suicide Squad grabbing a Best Makeup and Hairstyling gong previous year - but that could very well change with this new award category.

The requirements aren't known just yet, though we assume it will be to integrate films that are more popular with the buying public rather than exclusively the critics.

Last night, the Board of Governors met to elect new board officers, and discuss and approve significant changes to the Oscars telecast.

In a message to its members the Academy said eligibility requirements for the new category and other key details would be "forthcoming".

"We are committed to producing an entertaining show in three hours, delivering a more accessible Oscars for our viewers worldwide", the letter reads.

-And starting in 2020, the telecast will move up to an earlier date, most likely to the chagrin of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, shifting from February 23rd to Sunday, February 9, 2020. "The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast". The Board of Governors took this charge seriously. Is Best Popular Film a good idea or not?

"Here's the ten highest-grossing films, when accounting for inflation aka America's most "popular" films", Palotta wrote. "Popular films are films!"

- AmyAdamsUpdate (@AmyAdamsUpdate)We already have the People's Choice Awards.

- laura (@lauracsx)'Popular?' Does that mean bad but makes lots of money for the studios? "Every single one was either nominated or won Best Picture with the exception of 'Snow White, ' which was given an honorary Oscar".
