  • NFL preseason Bucs position battles to watch vs. Dolphins

Wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson, both of the Miami Dolphins, kneeled during The Star-Spangled Banner, ahead of their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Miami Herald reported.

Team owner Stephen Ross has said he would like his players to stand for the anthem, and the NFL recently suspended its rule regarding anthem protests until the league and players union can come to terms on a policy.

Several NFL players took a knee, raised fists or did not take to the field while the National Anthem was played Thursday night before preseason games.

Dolphins defensive end Robert Quinn raised his right fist.

It was a show of solidarity with the ongoing protests against police brutality and racial injustice, launched by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016 and banned by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in May. He said the team didn't agree with his belief that National Football League players should stand during the anthem.

Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins, an outspoken advocate for social justice causes, raised his fist during the playing of the national anthem, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Kaepernick applauded the Dolphins players shortly after the display for their protest of "systemic oppression".

The Philadelphia Daily News reported that Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett walked out of the tunnel during the playing of the anthem and headed to the team bench. Many vowed to risk the fine and continue protesting, despite the policy.

The new policy was met with a lot of disdain from the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), who stated that they were not consulted prior to the NFL's decision being publicized.
