Newcastle United were left without anything to show for a positive opening day performance against Tottenham.

There were victories for Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace in Saturday's Premier League.

The visitors needed just eight minutes to get their noses in front when, after Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka had turned away an Eriksen shot, the Denmark global delivered the resulting corner for defender Davinson Sanchez to attack. Tottenham started brightly and took the lead when goal-line technology ruled that Vertonghen's header had just crossed the line, only for Newcastle to draw level nearly immediately.

Pochettino continued: "I told them yesterday, for me, it's like we start from zero". He managed only four goals in all of last season. Benitez will believe that set pieces are heavily influenced by the tactical side of the game, therefore he won't be wanting his team to conceded often from them. In particular, Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane and Eric Dier were all below their best as Spurs struggled to turn possession into dominance.

Newcastle: Dubravka 7, Yedlin 7, Clark 7, Lascelles 6, Dummett 6, Diame 6, Shelvey 8, Ritchie 7, Perez 6, Kenedy 6, Joselu 6.

"I am happy in the way the players arrived after the holidays, and Dele was one of them". Eriksen's corner delivery is met by Sanchez who flicks it on to Vertonghen at the back post. The Spurs defender bundles it over the line, despite Newcastle's desperate effort to clear.

However, they were more open than he would have liked against Tottenham. He will know that it was a golden chance to score and he should have done better. The midfielder has all the time in the world to slot it home but he seems to buckle under the pressure, taking a heavy touch which allows Lloris to rush out to smother. He does everything right but is missing that bit of luck needed to score.

The match is available on Sky Sports Premier League at 12:30 p.m. GMT. Harry Kane continues his August curse with no goals and a yellow card.

It was no surprise that he started against Tottenham, as he is a crucial first-team player for Newcastle and he proved that he has the quality to influence games in the Premier League.

Newcastle's Venezuelan forward Salomon Rondon almost enjoyed a dream debut after coming off the substitutes' bench but his late effort was deflected onto the crossbar after a desperate block from Vertonghen.
