The University of Maryland has placed head football coach D.J. Durkin and members of the athletics staff on administrative leave during an investigation of the death by heatstroke of a football player.

Newly hired offfensive coordinator Matt Canada is serving as interim coach at this time.

The allegations in the story include ones of verbal and mental abuse that have contributed to a "toxic" culture at Maryland, which has already been under self-appointed external investigation following the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair following a workout.

ESPN recently published a report describing what it called a "toxic culture at Maryland football".

Athletic Director Damon Evans said in a statement Saturday that placing Durkin on leave was "the best decision" for the football program so that the "culture of the program" could be reviewed.

Jordan McNair, 19, died in June, reportedly from heatstroke after suffering from "extreme exhaustion" after a workout in May, reports said. McNair's parents are being represented by Baltimore attorney Bill Murphy, whose firm is also investigating.

June 25, 2018: Evans is named full-time athletic director. McNair died two weeks later on June 13. The report cited multiple people close to the program. According to sources at a staff meeting, Evans informed the team that head football athletic trainer Wes Robinson and director of athletic training Steve Nordwall were placed on leave.

Muschamp also addressed allegations from anonymous players, questioning their veracity and the players' motives. He reiterated his support for the full investigation of the program.

August 11, 2018: Maryland announces Durkin has been placed on administrative leave pending an external review.

Earlier Saturday, a person who had been briefed on the situation told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity that Court had also been placed on leave by the school.
