"We will evacuate people off of the three Gili islands". Strong aftershocks also jolted the area.

A local military official, Arifianto, told Indonesian TV that some suffered light injuries and were traumatised, but most were in good shape.

"You're safe, mister", said one of the soldiers as emotion overcame the man, clad in Islamic robes, and villager s crowded around him.

TRT World's Arabella Munro reports. The quake was also felt in Bali.

Lombok, a volcanic island that towers over the flatter Gilis, bore the brunt of yesterday's quake, with the vast majority of deaths occurring there.

A magnitude 6.4 quake hit the island a week ago, killing 17 people.

"There are now 447 New Zealanders registered on SafeTravel as being in Indonesia and nine registered as being in Lombok".

The quake was felt for several seconds in Bali, where people ran out of buildings.

More than 200 people were seriously injured. Many victims were treated outdoors because hospitals were damaged. However, an initial warning of a tsunami with waves of up to half a metre was later withdrawn. It was followed by more than 120 aftershocks recorded by a local Agency of meteorology, climatology and Geophysics.

"Later I stopped a vehicle and I asked a local please take me and my family to the airport and he said ´´okay no problem´". Sutopo said the figure would rise still further.

Singapore's Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, who was in Lombok for a security conference when the natural disaster struck, described on Facebook how his hotel room on the 10th floor shook violently.

"Earthquakes as devastating as they are, are really not surprising for Indonesia it's just that they're not widely publicised worldwide, other than if they are in, or close to Bali", he said.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton told Fairfax Media that he was on the hotel's 12th floor when the quake struck.

The Bali and Lombok airports continued operating on Sunday night, according to the director general of civil aviation.

Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.

In 2004, a devastating tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea natural disaster off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.
