Off the coast of Mexico, meanwhile, Hurricane John lumbered toward the Baja California peninsula as a Category Two storm.

As of 11 a.m., the Category 3 storm was about 220 miles south of Hilo and continues to weaken, with maximum sustained winds of 115 miles an hour, moving west at 16 mph.

Hurricane force winds can extent up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical storm-force winds up to 105 miles (165 km).

On the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale, a Category Five storm is the most risky, with winds exceeding 156 miles per hour (251 kph).

A powerful hurricane expected to pass to the south of the state is forecast to bring dangerously large waves to east-facing shores of some islands starting Tuesday.

Hurricane Hector was formed far out in the Pacific Ocean on 2 August with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour (140 kph).

According to Hawaii News Now, a high surf warning has been issued for east-facing shores of Hawaii Island for 12-13 foot waves and for east-facing shores of Maui for six to 10 feet surf in effect from 6 pm Wednesday.

"There will also be an increase in surf over the rest of the Hawaiian Islands through Friday".
