  • Hurricane Hector could collide with erupting Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii

Forecasters said the storm was moving west at about 12 miles per hour, and this general motion is expected to continue through the weekend.

Hector's winds dropped to 125 mph from 130 mph, the diving line between Categories 3 and 4, early Sunday as it moved westward at 12 mph Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory.

After Monday, the storm is forecast to weaken to a Category 2 or 1 hurricane.

Two of Mother Nature's most potentially devastating forces - a major hurricane and an erupting volcano - appear headed for a close encounter on Hawaii's Big Island next week, weather forecasters said on Friday.

Scientists differ over how hurricanes and volcanoes might interact, including the question of whether low atmospheric pressure from a major cyclone could help trigger an eruption, and much remains unknown on the subject.

Hurricane-force winds expected up to 30 miles from the center of the storm, while tropical storm-force winds reach up to 105 miles from the center.

"There is the potential for Hector to bring some impacts to portions of the Hawaiian Islands by the middle of next week, but it is too soon to specify the magnitude of the impacts or where they could occur", the National Hurricane Center said, in its latest forecast. Though it's not certain to make landfall, the NHC's cone of uncertainty shows the eye of the storm could hit the island's southernmost point.

Hurricane Hector updated track as of 5 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018.

The Kilauea volcano has spewed lava and molten rock into neighborhoods in Hawaii's Big Island for three months. The United States Geological Survey said Saturday that the volcano is still sending large amounts of lava into the sea. One man was injured in the weeks after the eruption began, and another 23 people were hurt July 16 when lava entering the ocean exploded onto a tour boat.
