Koepka rallied with a birdie at the 17th for a two shot lead over Australian Adam Scott, who shot a fine 65, with Spanish slugger Jon Rahm (66) three off the pace alongside another big hitter in American Gary Woodland and majors almost man Rickie Fowler.

He made birdie on the par-four first hole, again on the back of a great approach shot which left him a one-metre putt, but a three-putt on the par-four fourth hole put him back to even par for the round. "The key is to get the ball in the fairway and attack from there".

The 38-year-old was also hot with the putter, rolling in six birdies to keep Koepka within striking distance.

US Open champion Brooks Koepka fired a blistering 63, equalling the PGA Championship record for lowest round, to leapfrog into outright third at eight under.

Woodland had a 4-under 66 and set the PGA Championship record with a 36-hole score of 130.

Woods, whose earlier charge on the easier front nine raised the massive gallery's excitement to fever pitch, was among a logjam of six trailing by four shots.

Rahm birdied two of his final three holes to get to nine under, with Ireland's Shane Lowry a further shot back after birdieing the last to get within four of the lead.

Rounding out the Australian contingent is Marc Leishman (72) and Cameron Smith (73), who both tumbled down the leader board to be one over and three over respectively.

The 2-8 PM Eastern window is a limited one, more in line with what the Masters offers on Thursday and Friday, and the PGA doesn't have the Masters' ability to artificially suppress supply in hopes of increasing demand. Along with his three birdies, he saved par from a bunker on the par-3 sixth hole from about 18 feet.

Woods heads into the third round on four under par.

"I've watched Tiger win 14 of these things hanging around a lot of the time", Scott said.

Now he gets another shot, and it most likely will take another round like Saturday.

"I've worked my way into a chance to win this tournament just to throw it away on a bad decision", said Spieth.

Finau, who found himself clear back in a tie for 120th place after the first round, started off on fire with five straight birdies on Friday and he had moved up to even par for the tournament, right on the cutline after 11 holes when play was suspended for the day because of lightning and rain.

Birdies were not only everywhere, but necessary to stay in contention, and Spieth knew it, particularly at 17 - a par 5 where eagle is in play and birdie is a must. "I think we'll see some putts go in". I feel like I played well [Saturday].
