  • President Trump encourages Harley Davidson owners to boycott motorcycle company

U.S. President Donald Trump backed boycotting American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson Inc. on Sunday, the latest salvo in a dispute between the company and Mr. Trump over tariffs on steel. "It was American made, and that's why we stood behind them", one of the bikers told the NYT.

On June 27, president Trump criticized Harley-Davidson via Twitter, predicting that neither the administration nor the company's customers will "forget" the shift of production. A really bad move!

U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence leaves after meeting with Harley Davidson executives at the South Lawn of the White House in Washington U.S., February 2, 2017.

Trump's pronouncement came a day after he welcomed biker supporters to his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, and a New York Times article cited some Harley-Davidson owners criticising the company at a rally in Sturgis, South Dakota in the US. "USA will soon have a level playing field, or better", Trump said in a Twitter post.

As the Inquisitr reported on June 25, Harley-Davidson announced that it would be shifting production overseas in response to retaliatory tariffs imposed by the European Union.

'Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors.

Harley-Davidson said that it would manufacture its motorcycles meant for the global market in overseas factories, saying tariffs on its motorcycles rose from 6 percent to 31 percent as a result of the trade dispute.

The company has repeatedly described the Thailand factory, along with other overseas production, as vital to its long-term need to boost foreign markets to make up for sluggish sales in the US.

"I guarantee you, everybody who ever bought a Harley-Davidson voted for Trump", Trump said in an interview with Fox News.
