  • Google in talks with Tencent, others for cloud services in China - BBG

A June report from Synergy ranked Google fourth in the Asian cloud market, behind Amazon, Alibaba and Microsoft.

We're now hearing that Google is in talks with Tencent, Inspur, and some other Chinese companies to introduce its Cloud service to the Chinese market.

Once Google selects a partner, it hopes to run its internet-based services via data centres and servers provided by the Chinese company. Candidates for the partnership were narrowed to three firms this past March - those companies include Tencent and Inspur Group.

It has also been reported that Google plans to launch a version of its search engine in China that will block some websites and search terms, raising concerns among employees and some United States lawmakers.

As just about every USA tech firm has found, doing business in China is easier said than done.

The search engine giant is already developing a special search engine for China that would block information the country's government considers sensitive. The company can likely expect similar requests this time around as well.

Alphabet Inc shares closed at $1,238.16 on Friday, down $2.97 (-0.24%). Year-to-date, GOOGL has gained 17.54%, versus a 7.18% rise in the benchmark S&P 500 index during the same period. Earlier this year, Google announced a separate partnership with Tencent's WeChat social network, in the field of collaborative and development of future technologies. Tensorflow, a coding library for AI applications created by Google, is growing in popularity with researchers and software developers in China.
