French rescuers are still searching for an elderly German man who went missing after floodwaters ripped through a campsite in southern France on Thursday.

Rescuers have evacuated 750 people, including many children and tourists, from campsites in southern France after torrential rain swelled rivers in the Gard region.

Collomb, the interior minister, said in a statement that 1,600 people were evacuated as a precaution in the Gard, the Ardeche and the Drome regions.

The Gard government also said four German children were hospitalised for hypothermia in Bagnols-sur-Ceze.

'A German pensioner remains missing after being swept away.

Trapped by a fast-flowing torrent, he sought shelter inside his caravan - but the vehicle was swept away, the AFP news agency reports.

"Like everybody else, they should remain on their guard", he said.

'No one has suitcases.

More than 400 firefighters and gendarmes, many sent in from other regions, helped in the evacuations, using helicopters to spot campsites and occasionally to perform rescues.

A spokesman for Gard Prefectures said: "It is hoped the flooding will reach its peak by around 11pm on Thursday".

In one summer camp in Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas, 119 children were evacuated.

The south and central region of France have seen weeks of blazing sunshine replaced by dramatic storms, turning dry, baked campsites into muddy quagmires.

Around 17,000 homes in the area are without power.
