  • Five people still missing after Genoa bridge collapse

It comes as a state funeral for numerous victims was held on Saturday at Genoa's convention centre, led by the city's archbishop, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, and attended by President Sergio Mattarella and Conte.

Autostrade per l'Italia, the private company that manages nearly half of Italy's motorway network, had previously indicated it planned to rebuild the overpass.

The mass for 19 of the victims was held at the Exhibition and Trade Centre of the northern port city and led by the city's archbishop, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco.

At least 38 people died when the bridge crumbled on Tuesday and five are seriously injured in hospital.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte are due to preside over the state funeral, which local media say will also be attended by senior staff of infrastructure giant Autostrade per L'Italia, the managing company of the highway.

Italy's government, however, has begun procedures to revoke the company's concession and has vowed it will never again run the nation's roads and bridges.

The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport announced the creation of an inspection commission to carry out technical checks and analysis in an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

Francesco Cozzi said the state had "abdicated" its responsibility to ensure road safety by handing motorway management to the private sector, in an interview published Sunday.

Women mourn over a coffin with the Albanian flag draped over it ahead of a state funeral for one of the victims in Genoa, Italy. Nine people are still in hospital, four of whom remain in critical condition, according to the Genoa prefecture.

Some family members chose to bury the dead in their own towns instead of the state funeral service.

Meanwhile, Toti said that the hundreds evacuated from homes near or even under what remains of the bridge would be given new housing "within eight weeks".

Mourners also included the city's two football squads, Genoa and Sampdoria, who have postponed their weekend matches.

The unofficial death toll stands at 42 after the discovery of four bodies in the Morandi Bridge's rubble Saturday by rescuers.

Families of other victims have opted for private funerals.

The cause of the collapse is still unclear.

RAI said authorities now believe there are no more missing in the bridge collapse after a German man called officials to say he wasn't involved in the disaster. One white coffin held the body of seven-year-old Samuele Robbiano, who died alongside his parents.

Engineering experts determined in February that corrosion of the metal cables supporting the Genoa highway bridge had reduced the bridge's strength by 20 per cent - a finding that came months before it collapsed last week, an Italian news magazine reported on Monday.

The bodies of an Italian couple and their 9-year-old daughter were found in their smashed vehicle under a big block of concrete, Italian news agency ANSA said.

Anger is mounting over the tragedy and the structural problems that have dogged the decades-old Morandi bridge, which buckled without warning on Tuesday, sending about 35 cars and several trucks plunging 45 metres onto railway tracks below along with huge chunks of concrete.

All those listed as missing had now been accounted for, but crews would keep looking just in case, fire brigade official Stefano Zanut told Sky TG24.
