Erdogan says U.S. set deadline for pastor's release

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday slammed the crash of the lira amid a widening spat with the United States as a "political plot" and said his country would instead seek new markets and new allies.

President Erdogan urged his people in a counter-tweet: "Change the euros, the dollars and the gold that you are keeping beneath your pillows into lira at our banks".

Ahead of the U.S. data, Turkish President Erdogan's speech due at 1100 GMT could also fuel some fresh volatility around the European currency.

The already embattled Turkish lira tumbled some 16 percent to new record lows against the dollar on Friday as US President Donald Trump said he had doubled steel and aluminium tariffs on Turkey.

"The United States should know that the only result such sanctinos and pressure will bring... will be harming our relationship as allies", the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.

His chief advisor and spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin pointed out more blatantly that the United States might lose Turkey for good. "The entire Turkish public is against U.S. policies that disregard Turkey's legitimate security demands", Kalin, also a spokesperson for Erdogan, wrote for the pro-government Daily Sabah newspaper.

Turkey and the United States squabbled last week over Turkey's failure to free a US pastor named Andrew Brunson from house arrest while he awaits his trial on terrorism charges.

Without naming any country, Erdogan said that those - who stand against Turkey for the sake of small calculations - would pay the price.

Erdogan framed Turkey's currency crisis as a "national battle" against economic enemies, namely the USA, saying 'if they have their dollar, we have the people, we have Allah'. "Relations with countries who behave like this have reached a point beyond salvaging", said Erdogan, who warned of "economic war".

Downbeat US inflation report could rescue the Euro bulls.

"I'm not aware of any prior administration using tariffs in this way, and there's a very simple reason: because they're an incredibly blunt instrument that often can have blowback on American workers and consumers as we've seen in the China context", said Ned Price, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer who also served as a National Security Council spokesman during the Obama administration. Gulen has denied the allegation.

Andrew Brunson has been in Turkish custody since 2016, when he was arrested on charges of terrorism and support of a group held responsible for an attempted coup of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

His cause resonates with Mr Trump's Christian conservative supporters. "The U.S. has to rehabilitate its addiction to sanctions & bullying or entire world will unite - beyond verbal condemnations - to force it to".

"We are once again facing a political, underhand plot".
