EmuParadise Stops Hosting Retro Games to Stay Out of Legal Trouble

Rather the close down completely, the site, which has been online for 18 years, will continue to host listings for countless retro games and will focus on the community side of the website, and its database of emulators. Fans of the community that the website has created need not worry, as it seems that according to the post from the site founder, no lawsuits have been brought against the company.

While Nintendo's lawsuit was not stated outright to be the direct reason, the EmuParadise team states that the situation regarding emulation sites has been changing recently, though this is not something new to the site. The site has received thankful letters from users who were stationed overseas in the military, were happy to share their childhood games with the next generation, those who found solace in the ROMs after losing a loved one, and many more. "Unfortunately, it's not possible right now to do so in a way that makes everyone happy and keeps us out of trouble", EmuParadise states.

As the blog post also points out, the loss of such websites calls into question whether or not enough is being done to preserve certain aspects of video game history.

MasJ noted that they have dealt with issues in "all 18 years of [the site's] existence" and have "always complied with takedown requests".

ROM sites shutting down only feels as big as it does because of the completely abysmal job the video game industry has done keeping its games available.

This is an extremely emotional decision for me after running this site for so many years.

Thus, we have decided to make a new start.

"When I started EmuParadise things could have gone either way", the owner added.

The post goes on to explain that while the site's operators will "continue to be passionate retro gamers and will keep doing cool stuff around retro games", you will no longer be able to download games from the website.

We have already made several plans of what is going to happen next. We've had emails from soldiers at war saying that the only way they got through their days was to be lost in the retro games that they played from when they were children.
