'Elba, Idris Elba': Star's tweet stokes James Bond rumours

Idris Elba has reignited rumours that he could be set to take over the role of James Bond from Daniel Craig with a cryptic tweet that has sent fans into a frenzy.

"My name's Elba, Idris Elba", he tweeted, echoing the super spy's famous catchline, "The name is Bond, James Bond".

But before fans go overboard, Elba posted another tweet a few hours later saying, "Don't believe the HYPE".

Elba's name has now been linked to the Bond franchise for nearly a decade, during which time Daniel Craig has starred in three films in the series.

According to a report in Daily Star UK, producer Barbara Broccoli told director Antoine Fuqua that "it is time" for the character of Bond to be portrayed by a man of minor ethnicity.

A representative for Fuqua, however, disputed the report, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "He never had a conversation with Barbara about the franchise or about any casting".

Elba, 45, has previously said he thought he might be too old to play the legendary secret agent. "Idris has that", was the quote that The Daily Star claimed Fuqua made, and they also stated that Broccoli was responsive to the idea.

Craig will reprise the role of Bond, which he has inhabited since 2005, in the 25th Bond film which will be directed by Danny Boyle.

"I keep saying if it were to happen it would be the will of a nation because there haven't been any talks between me and the studio about any of that", he said.
