  • The US embassy in Ankara has faced numerous security threats in the past

According to worldwide media, four to five rounds were fired from a moving white vehicle, targetting the security booth outside Gate 6 at the embassy in Ankara.

The attack coincided with a deepening row between Ankara and Washington over the trial of a United States pastor in Turkey.

- Shots were fired from a moving vehicle at the U.S. Embassy in Turkey before dawn on Monday, an attack that came during heightened tensions between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

"We have no reports of any injuries and we are investigating the details".

A police officer told Reuters at the scene the drive-by shooting occurred around 5 am (0200 GMT) and that nobody was hurt.

The damage to a security booth by a shot fired, is seen outside the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, Monday, Aug. 20, 2018.

The U.S. Embassy was scheduled to close at midday Monday until the end of the week for the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, according to its website.

The attack comes amid tensions rising between Ankara and the USA over the detention of Andrew Brunson, an American pastor, in Turkey over terror-related charges.

Ankara's governor said suspects have not yet been identified. Brunson has been imprisoned since 2016 in Turkey over terrorism and espionage charges that the US calls baseless.

Turkey and the USA also disagree over their military interventions in the Syria war, Ankara's plan to buy missile defense systems from Russian Federation and the U.S. conviction of a Turkish state bank executive on sanctions-busting charges in January.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for a boycott on US -made electronic products, with some citizens heeding his call and filming themselves breaking their iPhones.
