  • Ronaldo is suffering from pneumonia

According to reports in local newspaper Diario de Ibiza, the 2002 World Cup victor was taken to Can Misses Hospital on Friday evening with chest pains where he was seen by doctors.

Respected island daily Diario de Ibiza said he had asked for a transfer to a private hospital called Clinica Nuestra Senora del Rosario just before midnight the same day.

The former Barcelona and Real Madrid player remains in intensive care and but was "evolving favourably", unnamed hospital sources told the newspaper.

Ronaldo is a frequent visitor to the Balearic party island of Ibiza and owns a property there.

He is believed to have arrived in Ibiza for a summer break a few days ago.

He was instrumental when Brazil won the World Cup in 2002, scoring both goals as they beat Germany 2-0 in the final.

Ronaldo, who was on holiday in Ibiza when he was taken ill, retired from football in 2011 following a hugely successful career that featured stints at PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Brazilian sides Corinthians and Cruzeiro as well as Real Madrid, where he is a club ambassador.

During his playing career, Ronaldo was famous for his blistering pace and phenomenal goal-scoring record. He has suffered since the end of his career with a thyroid problem that has caused him to gain a lot of weight, and back in 2012 he contracted Dengue fever and was admitted to hospital.

It can be life-threatening, especially among the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.
