  • Best meteor shower of the year peaks this weekend

If a meteor makes it all the way to Earth without burning completely up, it graduates from a meteor to a meteorite, however, most of the meteors in the Perseids are about the size of a grain of sand and are much too small to make it to Earth.

Although NASA reports that the Perseids are active between July 14 and August 24, NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke told Space.com on Thursday that the shower's peak will be most visible the nights of August 11 and August 12, with the second night possibly offering better viewing. The number of shooting stars will increase daily until August 12, when the meteor shower reaches its peak. The days before and after the peak will provide dark skies to see the shower, because NASA says the new moon will fall near the peak night. Go to the suburbs or the countryside away from the city lights.

This year, it is possible to see more shooting stars than last year. That's because the moon will be a thin crescent and set earlier, leaving skies much darker than normal. They'll be most visible in the hours leading up to dawn - usually between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. local time, according to the American Meteor Society.

During the peak, skywatchers should be able to see the most meteors in the shortest amount of time.

Enjoy the show, also if you're out watching the stars look for Mars and Saturn that night. Also make sure you check the weather forecast to see whether the sky will be clear or not.
