  • Barcelona defender Gerard Pique retires from Spain duty

Gerard Piqué has confirmed his worldwide retirement after winning 102 caps for Spain.

Pique was rumoured to have been considering his future with his national side following Spain's last-16 defeat to Russian Federation in the World Cup earlier this summer.

"I talked to him (Enrique) a week or two ago".

"I spoke with Luis Enrique and told him that my decision has been made", Pique told the media.

"It was a attractive time with the national team in which I had the chance to win the World Cup and the European Championship".

"I am proud that I was part of all that success but now I want to focus on Barcelona, because I have many years left here and I want to enjoy them".

Pique declared his intention to quit worldwide football after the 2018 World Cup following a World Cup qualifier against Albania in October 2016, saying he was exhausted of repeated criticism from supporters and the media, and that he wished "to be left in peace".

Pique will continue playing for Barcelona, who begin their season against Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday. He had said that he was exhausted of repeated criticism and wished to be "left in peace".

Pique announced before the World Cup in Russian Federation that he did not plan on returning to the national team after the summer.

Piqué - who reached his worldwide century during the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation - was part of the successful squads that won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.
