Chris Woakes (120 not out) and Jonny Bairstow (93) shared a match-changing stand of 189.

That brought in Chris Woakes (55 not out) and alongside Jonny Bairstow he ensured more pain for India.

Ravichandran Ashwin top scored for India 29.

James Anderson said that there were few batting line-ups that could have lived with England's seam attack after they ripped through India on the second day at Lord's.

Warwickshire favourite Woakes, recalled after England omitted Ben Stokes because of a clash with his fellow pace-bowling all-rounder's trial for affray, had missed the hosts' 31-run win in the first Test at his Edgbaston home ground last week because of fitness concerns following knee and calf injuries.

Much of the second day was lost to rain, which washed out the whole of Thursday´s play.

After a delay of more than two hours, the players returned for 12 balls, during which Kohli and Pujara groped around trying to find the ball as Anderson and Stuart Broad terrorised them under leaden skies.

Sam Curran (22no) made the most of some erratic bowling from Kuldeep Yadav to boost England's lead further and, weather permitting, he and Woakes will resume with the bat on the fourth morning.

Anderson´s haul left England´s all-time leading Test wicket-taker just one shy of becoming the first bowler to take 100 Test wickets at Lord´s.

Anderson's new ball partner Stuart Broad then joined the party with the wicket of Ashwin, who looked good during his 38-ball stay, that also included four fearless hits to the fence.

As expected England gave a Test debut to 20-year-old Surrey batsman Pope, who has competed in only 15 first-class matches but takes the place of the dropped Dawid Malan.

Seven balls later Alastair Cook joined Jennings back in the hut.

Jos Buttler (24) got in and got out before he too fell lbw aiming across the line as Shami took a third wicket this innings.

Coming back to the side, No.3 Cheteshwar Pujara survived 25 deliveries for 1 run before a mix-up with skipper Virat Kohli (23), cut short the Saurashtra Test specialist's stay even as rain stopped play once again.

Woakes, whose two for 19 on Friday included the prize scalp of India captain Virat Kohli, followed Bairstow to the landmark in 71 balls with his seventh four.
