  • Alex Jones’s podcasts are erased by Apple, in latest move against the conspiracy theorist who claims Sandy Hook was a hoax

Apple has wiped iTunes and its podcasting app virtually clean of content by Alex Jones, in one of the most aggressive moves by streaming services and technology companies against the conspiracy theorist and owner of the right-wing media platform Infowars. About 100 episodes of Infowars news-recap podcast RealNews With David Knight that remain available on iTunes.

Jones remains on YouTube, where he has almost 2.5 million subscribers.

Mr Jones has been widely criticised for repeating conspiracy theories that the 9/11 attacks in NY were staged by the USA government.

The shooting left 26 children and adults dead at a CT elementary school.

Jones is being sued in Texas by two Sandy Hook parents, who are seeking at least $1m (£770,000), claiming they have been subjected to harassment driven by his shows.

Neither Jones nor a representative for InfoWars were available early on Monday for comment.

The company cited bullying and hate speech for the decision.

In July, YouTube removed four videos from Mr Jones' channel, which has more than 2.4 million followers.

It no longer links to series such as The Alex Jones Podcast and War Room in its apps. "I can confirm that Spotify has removed the "Alex Jones Show" - Infowars", a spokeswoman said.

Among other claims, he has called the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting a hoax. The parents of two children shot in that attack are suing him for defamation, saying he had made "false, cruel, and risky assertions".

Jones, who propagates many far-right theories on his show, is now being sued by the parents of one of the 20 children who was killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. He has sought to have the lawsuit dismissed.

"To all other conservative news outlets - you are next".

While he began broadcasting his shows in 1999, Jones' profile has spread from the far-right fringe in recent years.

Also, Spotify, a music and podcast streaming company, removed some specific episodes of Jones's programs last week. Spotify took down several episodes of the show last week.

"More content from the same pages has been reported to us - upon review, we have taken it down for glorifying violence, which violates our graphic violence policy, and using dehumanising language to describe people who are transgender, Muslims and immigrants, which violates our hate speech policies", a Facebook spokesperson told The Guardian.

Jones hosts the daily Alex Jones Show podcast which, along with a number of other Infowars shows, can no longer be found in the Apple directory.
