Indian ride-hailing app Ola has announced plans to launch its services in Britain, as it seeks to challenge Uber's dominance. On Tuesday, Ola said its plans to enter the United Kingdom and has obtained licences to operate in South Wales and Greater Manchester, and it will also launch operations in South Wales within the next month.

Ola will intensity its rivalry with ride-hailing giant Uber, which says it operates in more than 40 towns and cities across the UK.

Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder and chief executive of Ola, said: "The UK is a fantastic place to do business and we look forward to providing a responsible, compelling new service that can help the country meet its ever-demanding mobility needs". The company said it was working with regulators to launch nationwide by the end of the year, but is yet to submit an application for a London licence.

Ola's latest moves to expand overseas is part of a broader company strategy to create a massive global business that will be generate consistent revenues, alongside its domestic Indian operations.

Ola further said that it will become the only app in the British market to offer services across both private hire vehicles (PHVs) and black cabs.

Founded in 2011 in Mumbai by two graduates from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Ola now arranges 1bn rides each year globally, with more than 1 million drivers and 125 million customers in more than 110 cities.

Uber, in March, chose to exit Southeast Asia, allowing it to focus on India.

While he didn't mention Uber or its recent troubles as a concern, Aggrawal said Ola will be focusing on engaging with authorities throughout the process. It claims it is charging drivers the lowest commission rates in the industry, starting at 10% for private hire vehicles and 5% for metered taxis. Ola was reportedly raising $2 billion from SoftBank and other investors last October, and the Japanese firm took a 20% stake in Uber at the beginning of this year.
