  • Man sentenced to life for hate crime shootings of Indian men in Kansas bar

On Aug. 7, a Kansas man was sentenced to life behind bars without the possibility for parole after he shot at two Indian men, killing one of them, according to an announcement from the Department of Justice (DOJ).

"What I do request is you use the time that is being given to you to educate yourself and inform others who are still out in the open and stop them from killing innocent people as you did - choosing violence over kindness".

Adam Purinton, of Olathe, Kan., had faced the death sentence before pleading guilty in May to federal hate crime and firearm charges. He wrapped a scarf around his face to hide his identity and barged in, firing multiple shots at Kuchibhotla and his friend, Alok Madasani.

Witnesses said Purinton, who is white, was asked to leave the bar after uttering racial slurs at Kuchibhotla and Madasani, who were working as engineers at GPS-maker Garmin at the time.

Purinton, from Olathe, had already been jailed for 50 years without parole on state murder charges.

A memorial for the shooting victims was growing outside of Austins Bar and Grill after the shooting.

"The crimes at issue in this case are detestable", Attorney General Sessions said.

Today also happens to be my 34th birthday and while I am missing my most precious thing in life - my Srinu - in a way, I see this as a sign from him helping me to gain closure with the legal process surrounding his murder and seeing this man brought to justice.

Sessions said that while the "irreparable harm" that Purinton has done can not be undone, "some measure of justice for the victims' families has been achieved".

"My Srinu had never hurt anyone and only had love and respect for others, but he had to lose his life because of your hate". Sitting at the table to his left were Ian Grillot and several other patrons as well as Kuchibhotla and Madasani.

Purinton poked Kuchibhotla in the chest, called him a "terrorist" and an epithet disparaging persons of Middle Eastern descent, and shouted, "Get out of my country!".

A Kansas man who fatally shot an Indian immigrant and wounded another in a suburban Kansas City bar is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday on federal hate crime charges.

Purinton said he "targeted and shot Kuchibhotla and Madasani due to their race, color and national origin" at his federal guilty-plea hearing, according to a Justice Department statement.

On Tuesday, the federal court handed Purinton a further three consecutive life sentences. "As a result, a promising young life has been tragically cut short, and other lives have been filled with suffering".

Purinton did not comment in court on Tuesday. He left the bar, drove home to retrieve a gun and then returned.

Purinton admitted that he shot Kuchibhotla and Madasani, attempting to kill both men, due to their race, colour, religion, and national origin.

A third man, 24-year-old Ian Grillot, was wounded when he tried to intervene.
