  • Ailing Woman On Oxygen Tank Dies When Electric Company Cuts Off Power In Her Home

Daniels has been in hospice care with congestive heart failure since the middle of April. "It was unbearable", she said.

PSE&G said in a statement to NJ.com that Daniels' electricity was shut off because of the "lack of payment over several months". Daniels, whose condition required her to use an electric oxygen machine to breathe, was suddenly without the technology keeping her alive.

The much loved-grandmother flagged in the 90F heat, and died seven hours after the power cut despite an attempt by emergency responders to revive her.

"She was trying to catch her breath - she was gasping for air", said her granddaughter, Mia, 28. When her backup oxygen tank ran out, paramedics arrived with oxygen from a portable tank; an hour after that crew left, the Newark woman passed away, reports News 12 New Jersey.

Another woman in NY lost three children after a candle she used to light her home after losing power started a fire, and a man in MI died of hypothermia after his power was shut off.

When the oxygen tank stopped running, they used a smaller reserve, and when that was empty, they called EMS, but it was too late.

"We put one ice pack here by her side and one on the other side". "But we couldn't pump the oxygen".

The power was apparently shut off because Linda had fallen behind on payments. Since May, the account owed around $1,800, according to ABC 7.

Jim Namiotka, a company spokesman, said: "As part of our policy, PSEG had notified this customer numerous times that their account was in arrears and that they would be scheduled for a service termination unless the account was made current".

They said they were unaware of Daniels' health issues until her power was cut - a claim disputed by Desiree - and urged anyone else who was unwell and struggling to pay bills to flag up their circumstances.

They also paid another $500 on July 3, two days before Daniels' died.

"There was no warning, no notice", he said.

According to Daniels's daughter Desiree Washington, on Thursday various members of the family tried to alert the power company about Daniels's precarious situation.

"We made numerous calls". "We have a large family and everyone in our family was calling".
