Wimbledon 2018: Angelique Kerber beats Jelena Ostapenko to reach women's final

Kerber, 30, accelerated into a comfortable 5-1 in the second before Ostapenko clawed back a couple of games by landing some big blows, but the German nipped the recovery in the bud to get the job done in 68 minutes and reach her fourth major final.

A first-ever duel between the two Grand Slam champions with diametrically opposed playing styles ultimately boiled down to a simple mathematical formula. Kerber, who lost to Williams in Wimbledon's 2016 final, will have a shot at redemption in what's already been a solid season.

Title favourite Serena, seeded 25th, has won nine of her 10 previous Wimbledon semi-finals.

A jubilant Williams celebrated with relish as she closed out victory with a break of serve to love on the Goerges delivery.

Germany's Angelique Kerber proved too steady for error-strewn Latvian Jelena Ostapenko as she reached her second Wimbledon final with a comfortable 6-3 6-3 victory on Thursday.

The German, who was runner-up to Serena Williams two years ago, triumphed 6-3 6-3 on Centre Court and is now one win away from a third grand slam title.

"It's such a great feeling to be back in the finals", Kerber said after the match.

Williams took a 19-match Wimbledon winning streak into the day.

The left-handed Kerber was mainly a passive participant in the early going against Ostapenko. She's been excellent this Wimbledon, although it wasn't easy late against the stubborn Ostapenko. That first game consisted of eight points: Three were unforced errors by Ostapenko, including a double-fault to begin the proceedings; the other five were winners by her, including a 100 miles per hour ace to close the hold. She had 14 winners and 10 unforced errors, while Kerber had three winners and - this was key - zero unforced errors. By the time she flubbed a backhand while falling behind 5-1 in the second, she dropped her racket and screamed.

The 29-year-old had served more aces (44) and hit more winners (199) than any other player in the first five rounds.

Kerber, who spent 34 weeks at world number one in 2016 and 2017, could be set for a rematch with Williams if the seven-time champion can get past Julia Goerges in the second semi-final.
